HCAA Anniversary Celebration

Hilltown Community Health Center (HCHC) is proud to announce a landmark celebration marking 75 years of dedicated service as a community health center and 50 years as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC).

Harry and Florence Bates in the 1950s.

Founded in 1950 by Florence Bates, a devoted Red Cross nurse who recognized the urgent need for permanent healthcare in the Hilltowns, HCHC began as the Worthington Health Association. Bates, working alongside local residents, laid the foundation for what would become an enduring community institution. Today, the Worthington Health Center, the Huntington Health Center, School-based Health Center at Gateway Regional School District, and John P. Musante Health Center in Amherst, serves almost 9,000 patients through over 31,000 annual visits. With care provided in 16 languages, HCHC offers a wide range of integrated services including medical, dental, behavioral health, optometry, nutrition, and weight management. The organization remains committed to ensuring access to high-quality, patient-centered care and promoting health and well-being for individuals, families, and communities.

“This celebration is not just about honoring our history—it’s about reaffirming our commitment to the communities we serve,” said Dr. Michael Purdy, CEO. “We exist because of, and for, our neighbors, and we’re excited to celebrate this milestone together.”

The event will recognize stakeholders, community members and staff who make it possible for HCHC to meet its mission. The Founders Circle Honorees will be recognized for their financial contributions that have supported the continued growth of the health center: Arlo Guthrie, John P. Musante, Mary P. Allison, Roy and Helen McCann, and Steffen W. Plehn. The Florence Bates Awards for Staff Excellence will be presented to staff members who exemplify HCHC’s mission and values in the areas of clinical practice, clinical support, and stewardship. The community is invited to celebrate the vitality, strength, and resiliency of the communities of Western Mass.
