Dear Community:

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!  Tomorrow the school will be open from 10 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. for the book fair, clothing drive, and the pulled pork lunch will be from 11:00a.m. – 1:00p.m.  We hope you can join us!

YOUTH CLOTHING DRIVE:  Tomorrow, Saturday, March 18th the Equity Advisory Committee is hosting a youth clothing drive alongside the Pulled Pork lunch and Book Fair.   We will take clothing donations tomorrow morning too.

PTO Seed Fundraiser: We are excited to announce that we will be fundraising with High Mowing Organic Seeds this year to support our school. Each student has received a fundraising form that contains the varieties offered on one side, and an order form on the other side.  Please make your selections on the order form, and return to the school with payments no later than March 21, 2023.  If you are a community member and would like to order seeds, please stop by the school between the hours of 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

High Mowing Seeds are 100% organic and non-GMO, so while you are raising money for your school you are also supporting a healthy community, and healthy planet. If gardening isn’t your thing, consider purchasing some as gifts for the gardeners in your life. The seeds will arrive in perfect time to start indoors, or to direct seed in the spring.

Please make checks payable to: Worthington School District PTO

News From Kate Ewald and the Historical Society:  Back in March of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic was announced, we at the Worthington Historical Society (WHS) searched our archives for stories of how our community experienced the flu pandemic of 1918/1919. Very little documentation was found.  Fearing that we might leave a similar historical void for future generations, it occurred to me that we invite today’s community to share pandemic stories.

I set out to document my own pandemic observations and experiences in a daily journal, imagining a couple of weeks, a couple of months. I began with news reports and how I adopted safe strategies. I pondered the realities of pseudo-isolation.  Clearly, I wasn’t the only one gearing my social exchanges to walks around town.  I began photographing discarded masks that seemed to define the pandemic, and also signage (hiring; entry protocols; closings).  People were laid off of work, schools closed and families had to adjust to a new way of life.  A food pantry opened in town, and folks shared resources through coordinated community networks.

I never expected to be following up nearly 3 years later, still documenting, waiting and wondering if the pandemic is yet over.  However, our community is moving forward into a new “normal,” returning to work, school and social gatherings, wearing or not wearing masks, each choosing a route according to one’s own sensibilities.  Now that we seem to have arrived at this new “normal” we at the WHS believe that this would be a good time to move forward with collecting your stories.

We’re asking residents and the teachers at the school  to share their stories through anecdotes, projects, observations and life experiences during these three long years, which will be archived at the WHS.  kewald.450@gmail.com
