at the very end of this post it mentions “‘It will be followed at 7:00 PM by a Special Town Meeting to consider these amendments, among other business….’
– our town officials love to blame the often frighteningly low turnout at special town meetings on the civic apathy of all THE REST of us residents…shame on you…Sadlythis (laughable small print afterthought) flaccid mention of the special town meeting that follows the hearing is not a mistake, but very much a pattern of troubling voter suppression by not doing anything more than the absolute minimum to make our residents aware of these special town meetings the same few people show up.
If the intention is democracy, might want to actually promote the special town meeting as much as the hearing… Also the hearing right before the town meeting seems to discriminate against working families who might not be able to give three hours on the same weeknight.
Hi Garbriel and Thank you for your comment.
I believe that what you’re seeing is a difference in timing and posting requirements. The Selectboard has chosen a date for a Special Town Meeting, but we have not yet finalized the warrant for that meeting. As stated in the Planning Board Hearing announcement, they will be considering and proposing amendments to our bylaws at the Special Town Meeting. They are legally required to not only post that Hearing 14 days in advance, but advertise it in the paper 2 weeks in advance as well, which means getting the posting to the paper in advance of the 14 days. Since we were sending the posting out to the papers, I went ahead and posted it here as well. It also felt appropriate to acknowledge at the end of the Hearing announcement/posting that the hearing is being followed by a Special Town Meeting, even though the full content (warrant articles) haven’t been finalize yet.
The Selectboard, Finance Committee and Planning Board are meeting jointly next Monday, Feb. 9, to finalize the warrant and get it posted by 2/10, 14 days before the meeting. I expect to then be able to post the Special Town Meeting Warrant here on Tuesday, 2/10. The Special Town Meeting has been on the Community Calendar with a tentative agenda noted.
I’m sorry for any confusion and appreciate your concerns.
