Fire Station Renewable Heating System Open House

Worthington Fire & Rescue Building

The Town of Worthington invites our local residents and officials from surrounding towns to learn more about our Fire Station’s recently installed renewable heating system.

You may have noticed the new silo sitting next to the Fire & Rescue/Police Department building. It’s a new wood pellet hopper.

With an eye toward our Green Community designation, the Selectboard, Fire and Police Deptartments and The Green Communities Committee have been working to find a suitable replacement for the aging, inefficient heating system at the station. Our challenge was to try and avoid fossil fuels. We landed on a modern wood pellet boiler.

The project was completed with generous support and funding from the Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) FY26 Action Grant program at the MA Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA). The project is expected to annually eliminate the burning of ~2,000 gallons of heating oil and reduce the Town’s carbon emissions by more than 22 tons/year.

With the successful completion of the project, we are now hoping to do something similar at Town Hall and are currently working on a grant for that project.

We are hosting an open house on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at 10 AM at Worthington Fire Station, 51 Huntington Road.

Come for information, coffee and doughnuts!
