Dear Community:

The month of March has flown by, and I can’t believe we have only one week left! The Worthington wind was blowing hard this week and some days the temperatures were in the low teens. I imagine we are all ready for the sunshine and warmer temperatures, but winter is holding on for a little longer. Please make sure to send your child(ren) with appropriate clothing for these temperatures.

Please make sure to read through the upcoming events that will be happening here at the school during the next month. The spring recital and PTO sponsored sled presentation are open to the public!

The 5 & 6 students traveled to Hampshire Regional on Tuesday to view a couple of scenes from Mary Poppins! A big thanks to the PTO for paying for the transportation! Our former student, Addison Thomas, who is in the 7th grade, has a part in the play! We got to see her tap dance during the chimney scene! I encourage you to check it out this weekend if you don’t have any plans! The show will be performed on
March 22 and 23 at 7pm and on March 24 at 2pm.

Field Trip to Springfield Museum: The students in grades K-6 visited the Springfield Museum last week. A big thanks to the PTO for paying for the transportation! Thank you! The 5⁄6 students shared that they saw many great exhibits and learned about the technology and industrial achievements in the Pioneer Valley.

Spring Recital: The R.H. Conwell Band & Chorus will present a Spring Recital on March 29 at 9am! The event will include a flute trio, a clarinet duet, a brass ensemble, and a percussion ensemble, as well as the chorus singing “Peace Like a River.” Families and community members are welcome to attend.

Cradles to Crayons Clothing Drive: From March 25th to April 5th, the Spring Into Action group at RH Conwell, along with Project 351, will be collecting clothing donations in support of the organization Cradles to Crayons. With the goal of ending clothing insecurity for children across Massachusetts, we will be collecting new and like new clothing, sizes newborn to adult medium. Donation boxes will be located at RH Conwell. If you have any questions contact Ada Corner at adavcorner@gmail.com or Shannon Madden at smadden@hr-k12.org

Morning Drop Off: We have noticed an increased amount of parents speeding through the parking lots and the driveway and not waiting for the car in front of them to leave and cars are going around and passing the cars. Please have patience for the student/students in front of you. We have many students exit out of the drivers side of the car and we want them to be safe. Please share this reminder with anyone else in your family that drops off or picks up students.

MCAS DATES: Students in grades 3- 6 will be taking the MCAS test during the dates listed below.

  • ELA: April 2 and 3
  • Math: April 30 and May 1
  • Science: May 14 (grade 5 only)

Solar Eclipse: On Monday, April 8, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the U.S., and Canada. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. While no place in Massachusetts will see the sun completely disappear, some parts of the state will see a shadow cover 95 percent of the sun, if weather permits. The eclipse will begin shortly after 2 p.m. and will last about two and a half hours until about 4:30 p.m. We ordered solar eclipse glasses for all the students!

News from the school nurses: Happy Spring!

While many of us look forward to the longer days and warmer temperatures, those who experience seasonal allergies this time of year may feel differently about welcoming Spring. If your student(s) typically require daily over the counter allergy medication this time of year, it is important to understand they work best when taken preventatively. These medications will not cure the allergies, but are designed to treat the associated symptoms. If the medications are stopped, the symptoms will return. Different types of pollen are prevalent at different times of year.

We recommend you start giving allergy medications to your student(s) anywhere from 2-4 weeks before they begin their typical allergy season. If your student(s) have a prescription allergy medication, it is best to follow the guidance of the prescribing provider. Please feel free to reach out if you need help navigating how best to support your student(s).
