Dear Community:

We had such a wonderful time during the Walk to School Event! The student feedback was overwhelmingly positive! A huge thanks to the Wellness Committee for planning this event! There was such a positive response that we are planning to do it every month beginning next school year!

Update from Mrs. Todd: The air may have been frosty, but Ms. Todd’s students were hot on a challenge of writing 100 words, building with 100 paper cups, or rolling to 100 on a hundred grid. Correct spelling and math were of course required, but this didn’t hinder anyone from striving for the goal. Several students achieved writing more than 100 words, or telling how to add up or multiply combinations of numbers within one hundred. Virtually every student enjoyed this day of fun celebrating the number 100!

School Choice: For the FY 24-25 school year we have one kindergarten seat and two third grade seats open for School Choice. Applications are due no later than March 8, 2024 at 3:00 p.m.

After-School Program Updates:

Girls On The Run Spring Season – Registration is now open

We are excited to offer Girls on the Run this Spring. Please register on-line by February 16th so we know if we have enough students to have a team. The spring season will begin March 11th and the 5K will be sometime during the first weekend in June (TBD). We will have practice on Mondays and Wednesdays.

The link to register is here: www.girlsontherunwesternma.org

Please use the discount code: “Conwell” to have the registration fee waived.

Boys on the Right Track Program

We are interested in offering a new program called Boys on the Right Track for our students. The program is for boys, grades 3 to 6. The program is a 9 week, social-emotional program incorporating wellness and physical fitness into each lesson. There would be 2 days of practice at the school for the 9 weeks. The team would participate in a Western MA 5K at the end of the program. If there is enough interest the spring season would start the week of March 11th.

If you would be interested in having your student participate in this program e-mail Shannon Madden (smadden@hr-k12.org) by February 16th to help us make the decision if we should move ahead to create a team.

Conwell Adventurers Summer Program

Registration forms for the summer program are now available and will be handed out to students this week in their classrooms. Registration forms should be returned to their classroom teacher or e-mailed to smadden@hr-k12.org by March 15.

The summer program will start July 8th and end August 1st. The program will run Mondays through Thursdays from 8:45 am to 2:45 pm. Students enrolled in R.H. Conwell in grades K to 6 are eligible to attend (K to 6 for the 23-24 school year). There is no fee for attending the program due to funding through the DESE 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant. Students must enroll/attend 80% of the program days. This is a grant requirement and the program will be working on projects and activities that build off of each other each day. Students will be going on fun field trips that will connect with our projects. More information and registration forms will be available next week.

New last day of school: Due to the snow day on January 24, 2024, our new last day of school for Preschool is June 6 and for K – 6 it is June 13.

Babysitting Course OFFERING: We are partnering with UMASS Amherst’s 4-H Youth Development program to offer a full day babysitting course to students over April break for

students 12 years and older. Mature 11 year olds will be considered as well if availability allows. The training course teaches youth what they need to know to be caring, trustworthy, responsible, and competent babysitters. The course will help develop confidence in handling various situations while babysitting, and will cover topics such as general safety, first aid, child development, nutrition, entertaining children, and the business of babysitting. All youth that complete the course will receive a babysitter’s ID, certificate of completion, 4-H babysitting manual, and first aid supplies.  We have confirmed the class will be held Wednesday, April 17 from 8:30am-3pm at R.H. Conwell.  If interested, please contact Nurse Steph at sfaas@hr-k12.org. Please register soon so we know if we have enough participants to run the class!
