Dear Community:

It was wonderful to see so many families during our Halloween parade and Harvest Festival.  A huge thanks to the PTO for organizing such a wonderful afternoon event!  The weather was perfect!

Greetings from Ms. Todd:  Please enjoy these photo captures of learning in Intervention, here focusing on mathematics, and our communities of learners.  Take a look at the first grade students who created their own 100 Bead String. This real world application of number knowledge included counting, skip counting, figuring how many and how many more to make ‘10’. You may notice their joy once they completed this project. These students are now continuing in their understanding of numbers and number relationships with this great tool. Feel free to ask them what a ‘decuple’ is.

Another aspect of learning mathematics is ‘productive struggle’. This very important state of learning pushes students to use what they know in new contexts or at next steps. Fifth and sixth grade students work in a small collaborative group once a week to solve open middle problems in mathematics, as well as “Russian” mathematics. Productive struggle is essential to students’ learning of mathematics with understanding, development of perseverance when faced with a challenge, and realization of doing well with effort. This is the learning side of one of the eight effective teaching principles in mathematics.

As a community of mathematicians, we have assembled a “Numbers Quilt”. After taking a moment to consider their favorite number, students were invited to create a quilt square showing their number and placing it into our quilt. For our community of readers, students created a display of favorite books. At Open House, families were invited to contribute a favorite childhood book as well. You may find your or your student’s contribution on this bulletin board and number quilt. My next greeting will highlight more about literacy.

It has been a wonderful start to the year, and I truly enjoy moving forward with these terrific children as they learn and grow in their math and literacy.

Hello, this is Mrs. Ashley, with a Harvest of the Month soundbite. Did you know that on average the food you eat travels 1,500 miles from where it is grown to reach your plate? This week we are featuring fresh, healthy, LOCALLY GROWN foods in the cafeteria. Our Kale is coming from our school garden!  Can you taste the difference?  Check out this months information here

We invite families to join us for breakfast and lunch each month.  For November, family breakfast will be 11/8/23 and family lunch will be 11/21/23.  Sign up sheets will be sent home..  Any questions or concerns please email me atompkins@hr-k12.org

We are also able to provide treats for special celebrations in the classrooms.  Please check out the link here for more information and the order form.
