R.H. Conwell Community Newsletter 10/18/2024

Dear Community:

It was wonderful to see so many families last evening at our annual Open House!  Thank you for taking the time to come see your child(ren) classrooms, and all the incredible lessons and hands-on activities the students have been working on so far this year!

Harvest Festival Sign -Up:  PTO has a great afternoon planned for the students but they cannot do it without your help.  Please SIGN-UP HERE to help.  Cider doughnuts, apples and apple cider will be available to all volunteers.

CAR POOL:  Are you a school choice family? Looking for drop off and pick-up help in a pinch? Need less driving on half days? Mallary Crossman, parent of three R.H.Conwell students, is volunteering to connect families with one another to create a list of school choice carpoolers who live nearby. She’ll map everyone’s address to find other families who live near you. Then she’ll create a list and make it available leaving you to compare schedules and make plans should the need to carpool arise. Email Mallary at: [email protected]

Please provide the following in your email response:

Summer Program 2025:  Save the dates! The After-School Program’s Summer Program will run from Monday, July 7th to Thursday, August 1st. Students enrolled in R.H. Conwell in grades K to 6 are eligible to attend (K to 6 during the 25-26 school year).  There is no fee for attending the program due to funding through the DESE 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant. Students must enroll/attend for the 4 weeks. This is a grant and program requirement.  More information and registration forms will be available in February.

From The School Nurses: We have updated our return to school guidance for strep throat infection. If a student or staff member has strep throat, they may return to school when they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications, and they have received the appropriate antibiotic treatment for 24 hours. This change was made to be consistent with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Guidelines.

Along the same lines, we want to reiterate to families that despite our strong belief that students should be in school and have been really promoting attendance this school year, it is critical to recognize there are times that students should be home. Please look out for a printed list of reasons to keep your student home, as well as some guidelines for when they can return to school in your student’s folder this week. When students are too sick to be in school, it is important that they get the rest their bodies need to be healthy again, and prevent the spread of illness to others in the school community. Please always feel free to reach out to Nurse Steph or Nurse Meg if you are questioning whether or not to send your student to school.

We appreciate your partnership in preventing the spread of illness in our school community.

From The Cafeteria:

This week we got to sample Red Cactus Pears, and Raw Okra! Red Cactus Pears are the annual edible fruits that grow on the edges of the flat pads of the cactus. Red Cactus Pears grow wild all over Mexico and Central America. Red Cactus Pears are juicy and aromatic offering a very sweet flavor reminiscent of watermelon. Watch out for the edible seeds!

Okra has a mild, almost grassy flavor. While it’s sometimes compared to the taste of eggplant or green beans, its texture gets more attention. Okra is crunchy when cooked quickly but becomes almost mouthwateringly tender when slow-cooked.

This week we will be celebrating National School Lunch Week!

October’s harvest of the month is Pears, check them out here: Mass Farm

Be on the lookout for Pears during lunch and breakfast.

The October menu can be found here.  If you have any questions please email Ashley @ [email protected]
