On June 13, 1825, General Lafayette crossed from Berkshire County into Hampshire County near Worthington, Massachusetts, where he spent the night on his way from Albany to Boston. 200 years to the day after Lafayette’s visit, we will mark for generations to come this historic event by formalizing the installation of a Lafayette Trail bicentennial marker.
In conformity with the spirit of republican education championed by Lafayette in his time to promote a greater understanding by Americans of the ideals of freedom and democratic equality upon which their nation was founded, this event will be FREE OF CHARGE AND OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC. We extend our most sincere gratitude to the Worthington Historical Society for supporting this project for their community. We also would like to thank the town select board for swiftly approving this item and recognizing the importance of this historic anniversary. Finally, we would like to acknowledge the essential support from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.
We find comfort in knowing that once installed and dedicated, this monument will tell the story of Lafayette’s visit to Worthington and educate younger Americans about its meaning, thereby fulfilling Lafayette’s political goal of institutionalizing freedom across generations in the United States.
We hope to see you there!
Best regards,
