R.H. Conwell Community Newsletter 12/13/2024

This morning the Conwell band and choral students gave an awesome performance – showing off their singing and musical playing skills!

Betsy’s Bookshelf: Here’s a quick question for you:

True or False: Reading aloud to children helps develop their vocabulary and reading skills, even before they can read independently?

If you answered true, you’re right! Reading just one book out loud a day can acquaint children to

78,000 words a year.

It’s a simple yet powerful way to nurture young minds and encourage lifelong learning. Enjoy giving your child the gift of a rich vocabulary this holiday season.

Conwell teachers were asked what book was their class’ favorite last year. Here’s what the students thought:

Grades 5/ 6— Save Me a Seat

Grades 3/ 4— the Penderwicks, A Tiger Called Kitten, I Survived Grades 1/ 2— Mysteries According to Humphrey and Skunk and Badger

Grade K— Elephant and Piggie, Pete the Cat, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Preschool— Caps for Sale!

Any of these are available at many local libraries.

And, here’s what you’ve been waiting for!

Faculty at Conwell shared their favorite book/s from the grade in which they teach. See if you and your child/ren can guess whose fave is whose, and which grade is which?

Fun Facts:

  • All of the respondents continue to read for enjoyment.
  • On average, the Conwell faculty read 35 minutes a day.

Next week’s installment- how did they get there and why do they still read?

In the joy of reading, Ms. Todd

From the Nurses Office: Our backup supply of gloves/mittens runs short nearly every day. Please help your students to remember their warm hand coverings. It is bitter cold up here! They make great stocking stuffers!

You parents rocked the snowpants! Thank you!

Calling all R.H. Conwell Chorus Members: The R.H. Conwell Chorus has an opportunity to join the New Hingham Elementary Chorus in performing the National Anthem at an upcoming UMASS Basketball game! This will be a great opportunity for students to meet peers who they may be singing with in middle school and high school, and a wonderful way to showcase their musical talent! Please email me at [email protected] to indicate whether you would like your student to participate. The date hasn’t been set yet, and your response will help us know whether this will be a feasible endeavor for us to move forward with. Tickets are $10 to attend, and we’re hoping to get a good crowd to support our singers!

From the Cafeteria:
This week we had butternut squash and fresh cranberries for our Fresh Fruit and Vegetable sample. Did your child like them?
